Starting October 1st, the Chicago Public Library will eliminate all overdue fines.
The mayor's office says the move is meant to help allow people (especially youth and low-income) basic library access. Chicago is now the largest city and public library system in the U.S. to adopt this policy.
This new policy is part of a series of policies that Mayor Lightfoot has been working to roll out to "eliminate regressive fines and fees that have had a history of effecting lower income residents."
