Kirk Franklin apologizes to singers like Chicago's own, Opal Staples

Opal Staples is a contestant on Season 9 of Sunday Best. During a mentoring session with Kirk Franklin, the Grammy award-winning artist apologized to all singers like Staples on behalf of the gospel music industry.

Staples broke down while practicing for her performance. She talked about how she feels like the odd ball out because she doesn't sound like a lot of gospel singers.

Franklin apologized to Staples saying, "I want to personally apologize to singers like you. It is ignorant that when a personal yells, we call them anointed, but if they sound sweet, they don't have God's hand on them. That is foolishness for you to assume that the only way that you are anointed is for you to sound like a certain element of what the church is."

He went on to say, "Scripture teaches us that every person born of the spirit is anointed."

Staples says she felt free after her conversation with Franklin.

You can catch Sunday Best on BET at 7 p.m. every Sunday.
