Empire actor, Jussie Smollett is being sued by the city of Chicago. The lawsuit comes after Smollett didn't pay back more than $130,000 to the city. It was all put in a letter that was sent to Smollett's legal team. The letter asked him to pay for all of the overtime hours that were spent investigating the alleged attack. Those hours totaled up to more than $130,000. The deadline for Smollett to pay the city was late last month, but since he didn't pay, the city has decided to sue.
According to the lawsuit, the city is seeking more than just the $130,000. It is also asking that Smollett pay the city of Chicago $1,000 for each false statement he made to the city and three times the amount for the damages that the city endured. The city is also asking for Smollett to pay litigation costs, collection costs, and attorneys' fees.
Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot was asked how she feels about the charges and how she will handle the city's involvement with the case moving forward when she takes office. You can listen to her response below.
