47 years ago today, Arthur Ashe defeated the favored Jimmy Connors to become the first Black man to Wimbledon. He also won the US Open and the Australian Open. In 1983, Ashe contracted HIV, likely from a blood transfusion. He educated the public about HIV and AIDs, founding The Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS.
