While we may be enjoying the 3-day weekend and all of the barbecue, on Memorial Day we must remember to honor all those who have fallen fighting for our country.

Here are 4 things to know about Memorial Day:

  1. It began as a response to the Civil War. Sadly more than 620,000 soldiers died.
  2. Major General John A. Logan Logan was the man who was instrumental in making Memorial Day an official holiday.
  3. The day was made official so people could "decorate the graves of soldiers who died in defense of their country."
  4. Memorial Day was previously known as Decoration Day.
